TransPak UK appointed Kingsley to install 3.6 m high security fencing at the TransPak Newport Warehouse. The brief was to design and install security fencing that would meet airport / anti-terrorism levels of security.

The solution was a 3.6 m high chain-link fence with steel posts and two rows of barbed wire fixed through the tops of cantilevered posts. A large sliding gate with a locking device gives access to the compound.

Scope of work

The scope of the project included the following key elements:

  • Design: After an initial site meeting to go through the brief with the client, a design was developed to achieve the specification and objectives. A material list was drawn up, with essential specification details including hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated to specification. Once the client approved the design, an order was placed and the works were scheduled.
  • Installation: Before installation, a risk assessment was carried out and a RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statement) was issued to the team and the client. The workforce were provided with the required PPE and briefed on the works, with all H&S hazards highlighted along the way.

The team arrived on site, set out the posts and began installing the system, completing the works over a three day period.

Materials required

  • 3.6 m high chain-link fencing
  • Galvanised steel posts with cantilevered tops (sized for security and strength)
  • Resin adhesive solution to fix posts to the existing slab (to maximise strength)
  • Sliding gate components (track, gate frame, rollers)
  • Digital locking system for the gate
  • Two rows of barbed wire with tensioning accessories (arms, clips, etc.)
  • Tension bars and bands
  • Galvanised tie wires
  • Bolts, nuts and washers

Challenges and solutions

  • Terrain adjustments: The installation needed some modifications because of uneven ground, and the team adjusted the fence and gate structure to ensure stability across the perimeter.
  • Integration with existing security systems: The digital locking device was integrated with the facility's existing security system, to coordinate physical and digital security measures.
