Six styles of garden fence.
Feather edge fencing
Close board and feather edge are interchangeable terms for a fence in which vertical boards overlap and taper from top to bottom, fixed to horizontal rails and posts. One side of each board is thicker than the other, like a feather.
It is a low-maintenance, durable and affordable fence. We take care over alignment and gravel boards.
Our feather edge fences are pressure-treated timber, to withstand British weather. We can also supply and install concrete posts.
- Durable: pressure-treated timber.
- Low maintenance.
- Affordable.
- Precise alignment for a straight, secure result.
Hit and miss fencing
Hit and miss describes planks fixed alternately to the front and back of the cross-rail. The planks are shared equally, so the fence looks the same from both sides.
It is a popular alternative to feather edge: it looks good from both sides and does not disadvantage a neighbour's view. We use pressure-treated timber.
In our experience, hit and miss suits coastal locations with strong crosswinds. The alternating planks leave small gaps that let some wind through.
- Modern look.
- Identical from front and back, which keeps good relations with neighbours.
- Pressure-treated timber to withstand the elements.
Panel fencing
A panel fence is a pre-made section of fencing, fixed to upright posts. Ready-made panels are quick to install.
Panels come in many styles, such as rounded tops or built-in trellises.
- Quick installation: panels fixed to upright posts.
- A range of styles, such as rounded tops or built-in trellises.
Picket fencing
Picket fencing and gates are a low-level way to mark a boundary. They are often chosen to protect planted areas, to subdivide a driveway or a shared area with a neighbour, or as a safety precaution around ponds or pools.
Picket fencing is low, with equal spacing between the upright planks, so it does not block light or your view.
- Marks boundaries, protects planted areas or subdivides driveways.
- A practical option around ponds and pools.
- Open design that does not block light or your view.
Cedar fencing
Red cedar is a hardwood option for a garden fence. Most garden fences are built from softwood pine, which can be strong and durable but is not comparable with a hardwood.
Hardwoods grow more slowly than softwoods. That slow growth packs the woodgrain closer together, leaving the wood dense, which suits outdoor projects such as fencing.
- Durability: dense woodgrain makes red cedar more durable than softwood.
- Weather resistance: the tight grain resists the weather, season after season.
Composite fencing
Composite fencing is made from reclaimed wood fibres and recycled plastic, combined by co-extrusion. It is a popular alternative to wood: durable, low maintenance, and its colour will not fade in sunlight.
It is quick to install and available in a choice of colours and designs.
- Resists warping, cracking and rotting.
- Keeps its colour in sunlight and harsh weather.
- Made from reclaimed wood and recycled plastic.
- No painting or rot treatment.
