Project Analysis Killarney National Park
Our company recently achieved a major milestone by completing Phase One of a significant project in Ireland, valued at £1.7 million. This project was distinguished by its complexity and scale, particularly in the realms of deer management fencing and invasive plant species culling. Remarkably, we were the first contractor to meet the stringent tender requirements for this project in over 21 years.
Challenges
The project presented several unique challenges:
Material Transportation: The remote location of the site made traditional material delivery methods unfeasible. We overcame this challenge by using helicopters to transport essential materials directly to the site.
Site Access:The rugged terrain necessitated innovative access solutions. We utilised speed boards to create a stable and efficient route for both personnel and machinery.
Environmental Sensitivity: The project required careful handling to preserve the natural environment while addressing specific tasks such as fencing and culling.
Scope of work
The project included two primary tasks:
Deer Management Fencing: We installed specialised fencing to manage the deer population effectively. This involved designing and erecting durable barriers that would both control deer access and blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.
Invasive Plant Species Culling:To protect and restore local flora, we undertook the culling of invasive plant species. This critical task aimed to prevent these species from disrupting the native ecosystem and ensure the long-term health of the habitat.
Innovative Solutions
To address the challenges, we implemented several innovative strategies:
Helicopter Logistics: Materials for both fencing and culling operations were airlifted via helicopter, circumventing the difficulties posed by the site's inaccessibility.
Speed Boards for Access:We laid down speed boards to provide a stable and efficient access route across the challenging terrain, facilitating smooth operations.
Eco-Friendly Basecamp: A crucial component of our approach was the establishment of a specially designed basecamp for our team. Situated on ground screws, this basecamp minimised environmental impact and was constructed to avoid disrupting the surrounding habitat. It provided a functional, sustainable living space for our team members, who lived onsite throughout the project.
Team and Execution
Our project team consisted of 20 skilled professionals, with 7 residing at the basecamp during Phase One. This arrangement ensured effective management and execution of the deer management fencing and invasive species culling, while maintaining our commitment to environmental stewardship.
Outcome
The successful completion of Phase One was marked by:
Meeting Long-Standing Tender Requirements: We achieved what no other contractor had in 21 years, fulfilling the complex requirements of the tender and demonstrating our expertise and capability.
Effective Environmental Management: Our approaches to deer management and invasive plant species culling were executed with minimal disruption to the natural environment. The use of ground screws for the basecamp and our careful handling of the site highlighted our dedication to sustainable practices.
Conclusion
This project exemplifies our ability to handle intricate, environmentally sensitive tasks with innovative solutions. Our successful execution of deer management fencing and invasive species culling, coupled with our ability to meet longstanding tender requirements, underscores our leadership in the contracting industry and our commitment to both excellence and environmental stewardship.
